REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf or his familiar name Gus Ipul confirmed that the People's School program is a major strategy of President Prabowo Subianto to break the link of intergenerational poverty in Indonesia. This was delivered in the event of the operational inauguration of the People's School at Sentra Ingensuwa, Bogor, on Monday (14/7/2025).
“People's Schools are here to stop the cycle of poverty between generations, expand access to education, guarantee quality education for children of poor and extreme poor families, and no one should be left behind in the world,” Gus Ipul said in his speech.
He added that the implementation of the People's School is not done alone, but rather involves teams across ministries and agencies, as per the Presidential Instruction of 2025. Gus Ipul himself was appointed as operational responsibility.
On the occasion, he revealed that since this idea was announced by the Coordinating Minister of Community Empowerment, Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar or Gus Imin, the program was directly followed up with the formation of a task force (task force) and the implementation of the initial phase.
“Six months after it was announced to the public, we can already start learning in start-up schools by 2025,” he said.
The program is built on the basis of the Folk School Trilogy, formulated by Tim Purnatu. The three main principles of the program are: glorifying the little ones, reaching out to the unattainable, and enabling the impossible.
“Those who are forgotten, those whose voices are barely audible, those who are papa, those with children who are out of school, are not in school, and potentially even out of school,” said Gus Ipul.
The People's School does not use academic tests as a condition of admission. The selection was based on national socioeconomic data showing extreme poverty. Prospective students also undergo a complete health examination, DNATL technology-based talent mapping and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as basic competency mapping.
